The Rouge Wave Mailbag

I.M. Anonymous left a comment on yesterday's blog post that I thought was worthy of discussion. I.M. says:

I find it terribly ironic that a "writer" (like you) is so pro censorship that they have to "approve" commentary before "allowing" it to this blog...it's an interesting way to encourage discourse.

And here's my response:

First of all, I.M., thank you for your comments. Here's the way I look at it. The Rouge Wave is my blog, not a venue for back and forth discourse in the same way that a message board forum is.

The Rouge Wave is to read and enjoy. I work hard to provide content as regularly as I can, within the constraints of my other obligations (work, family, you know the drill). I often have to do it late at night or ahead of time so that I can maintain content for my readers. It's something I love to do; it's a passion project.

If a reader wants to contribute to the conversation by leaving a constructive comment then great; but if someone is here to argue and get personal, they can go to a message board and join the other trolls.

I am the editor-in-chief (ha) and yes, I do reserve the right to moderate my own blog. Truth be told, I have only had about two comments in the past several months that were unconstructive or rude. But I'd like to keep it that way. So yes, I do approve comments.

I hope that answers your question.

If you enjoyed this post, follow me on Twitter or subscribe via RSS.

Here here. I enabled comment moderation because I had this one person constantly make anonymous comments that were very rude attacks alleging that I am a horrible person who deserves to be fired or stabbed or something. If everybody used the forum in an intelligent way maybe we wouldn't have to moderate the comments.

What an odd point of view!

Here's an alternative way of saying the same thing:

"Dear Rouge Wave,

I noticed you have webpage. Please configure it so that anyone in the world can put whatever they want on your webpage. If you don't, then you are clearly pro-censorship"

Why wouldn't someone choose what to put on their own website? That isn't censorship .. it is common sense.

Sheesh.

Mac.

As far as I see it - it's your blog and therefore your right to moderate comments if you wish to.

I.M. I decided to take all angry-seeming comments off of this post in the spirit of keeping the RW a HAPPY little corner of the screenwriting universe. Posting your comment for all to see was a tip of my hat to you out of respect for your legitimate question. Further discussion of this topic, however, can be taken up with me privately if you wish.

Blogs aren't open forums, they are an individual's space. It's like going over to someone's house. The owner's house, the owner's rules.

If I don't like what a blogger has to say or their attitude, I don't go to their blog. One recent blogger was snippy towards me & told me to vote with my mouse, so I did. I no longer visit that site.

But I would never in a million yrs spam them with rude, anonymous comments. That's childish.

I don't mind moderated blogs. It's not a big deal if you have something constructive to say.

I don't moderate myself simply b/c I haven't found the need. But if I started getting rude comments I would moderate in a heartbeat.
